Who We Are

All across the country, slow food, farm-to-table movements are taking root, but primarily in larger cities. So here, at LF&W, we aim to bring these movements right to the doorstep of Punxsutawney, PA, connecting the community with local health and wellness resources. And with PA being #1 in the nation for farmland preservation, we owe it to the future generations to set them up for sustainable success.

The Local Food and Wellness Committee is comprised of individuals whose lives revolve around a wholesome, sustainable lifestyle.

Season Petrovich, President

FB_IMG_1493243682853Having a passion for food and nutrition as well as having worked in food service for over 10 years, Season knew very well the issues facing her local community and food system. This motivated her to form the Local Food and Wellness Committee in order to help educate those around her while connecting them to wholesome resources nearby.

Season is a graduate of the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts and IUP Main Campus with a B.S. in Food and Nutrition. She is also a Registered Yoga Instructor (RYT-200) and owns Homestead Yoga Studio and School of Sustainable Living, LLC located in Smicksburg, PA. In her spare time, you can find her hiking, running, foraging/gardening, and enjoying time with her husband, 2 dogs, 5 ducks, and 11 chickens.

Alena Kupchella-Gourley, Vice President

Despite growing up in the country where she always had a garden, canned their own food, and raised chickens, Alena wasn’t always enthused about it. It wasn’t until she was older and started having kids that she became more concerned about the quality of her family’s food, body care, and household products. Together, they all worked to limit their exposure to toxins and try to source the healthiest products they could while supporting local resources as much as possible. Alena aims to support others’ minds, bodies, and spirits through her work teaching The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth classes, making and teaching about natural body care products, and providing regression therapy. She is very excited to be a part of the LF&W Committee to help spread knowledge and awareness about local food and wellness resources.

George Giroskey, Committee Member, Owner of Thistle Lane Farm

Having grown up in the city, George was one of the least likely candidates to get into the farming business. It wasn’t until he came to work on a family member’s farm in Pennsylvania that he realized how much farming and nature spoke to his soul. He learned how to care for livestock and farm animals the way they were meant to be cared for, allowing ruminants to graze freely on grass and chickens to roam where they pleased. George’s goal is to turn Thistle Lane Farm into a learning center for the community, especially for younger generations, to teach about sustainable and humane farming practices.
